ARGENTINA: Senate acts tough on economic emergency powers

President-elect Cristina Fernández will not enjoy economic emergency powers when she takes office on 10 December. Her husband President Néstor Kirchner had decided to present her with the gift by pushing through congress a one-year extension of the economic emergency act, which he enjoyed during his term. It was approved by the lower chamber, but the senate refused to play ball, providing Kirchner with his most serious defeat in the senate since coming to power in 2003.
